2020 the year in a glance.
I bet I lost some the readers right there because nobody wants to look back at that shit show.
However, in order to look forward one must look back; back at the good and the bad.
The bad:
Covid-19, masks, social distancing, mandates, quarantines, lack of toilet paper, lack if canning jars, blah, blah, blah…this list could go on and on. But I am preferring to focus on the better parts.
The good:
People shopped local. They didn’t want to wait in queue to get a dozen eggs or loaf of bread. Great for us little farms. People found us for the first time. “I have driven by here for years and have always wanted to stop.” Most have become regular customers. Some even friends.
Appreciation for the local farmer/producer increased. When you can go to the grocery store and it has everything needed one doesn’t question where it comes from until it isn’t readily available. Pork for example. The largest producer of pork in the United States and the world is Smithfield. Covid hit the producer and they shut down (forced to) and pork availability dropped dramatically. Consumers learned that their local farmers had pork. And beef and eggs…
Imagination became one of our biggest assets in overcoming the obstacles forced upon us. In our new world of social distancing we all persevered and thought outside of the box. For example, we had a curbside bridal shower for our new daughter in law.
We learned that we can do what need to do to keep everyone safe and healthy even when it sucks. We can follow the rules even if we are non-conformists. Not because we are weak or sheep but because it is the sensible thing to do. We can also conform and find unusual ways to still make eking out a living possible.
2021 may not be that different from 2020 but we got this, together we got this.
Thank you all for making an incredible shitty year an AMAZING year for our little farm.
J.
